NEW winter flight route from London Heathrow to Innsbruck + our favourite places

For anyone planning a ski trip this winter, Innsbruck in Austria should feature top of the destination list: there are brand new flight routes into the city making it even quicker and easier to reach the mountains; the Olympia Ski World Innsbruck with its 300km of pistes and the picturesque Habsburg Old Town.

From 4 December 2016, British Airways is introducing a new direct flight route to Innsbruck from Heathrow Terminal 5. Skiers will now be able to fly to the 3-times Winter Olympic city from two UK airports with British Airways (the airline already operates direct flights from London Gatwick to the Tirolean capital six days a week).
Innsbruck is a gateway to some of the best skiing in the heart of the Austrian Alps with iconic ski resorts such as the Olympic resorts of Axamer Lizum and Patscherkofel. The highest ski village in all of Austria – Kühtai – is as well part of the Olympia Ski World Innsbruck and only a 30 min transfer from Innsbruck airport. It offers not only great ski-in and ski-out hotels but is also known for hosting the adventurous Channel 4s “The Jump”. Overall, 9 ski areas form together the Olympia Ski World Innsbruck and are all accessible with one pass.
Innsbruck has ski resorts to suit every skier and we’ve put together three of our favourite:
The Nordkette area for beginners
This region is just north of Innsbruck itself and is often referred to as Nordkette Innsbruck. Thanks to the ski school and ski rental services provided, it is perfect for those visiting the area for the first time.
Superb views from Kuhtai-Sellraintal
About 40 kilometres from the centre of Innsbruck is one of the most exclusive skiing regions in Austria. This is called Kuhtai-Sellraintal, and it is also the highest skiing region in Innsbruck and snowfall is highly reliable here, since the slopes reach up to more than 2000 metres.
Visit the charmingly Oberperfuss
Many areas of Innsbruck are delightful both in summer and in winter, and Oberperfuss is no exception. This attractive village may be small but it can still cater for plenty of determined skiers. Oberperfuss is approximately halfway between the centre of Innsbruck and the Kuhtai resort. Skiing is the best on the Rangger Kopfl Mountain, with the village nestled at the bottom awaiting your return at the end of the day. Cable cars transport you to the summit to give you the choice of several kilometres of challenging slopes. In addition, you can continue skiing into the night for two nights every week, when floodlights make it possible to ski after dark.
